QSun is a sun safety wearable device and companion app that tracks your sun exposure to help you prevent skin damage while maintaining healthy vitamin D levels. It notifies you when you’re about to get sunburned so that you can keep doing what you love under the sun. As an advanced AI-powered wearable, the QSun device monitors and analyzes your sun exposure in real-time. The algorithm combines your current sun exposure with your skin type, environmental situation and sun safety habits to give you tailored recommendations.

UV index (UVI) reflects the strength of UV radiation at a specific time and location, on a scale from 1 to 11+. The UVI indicates potential danger of sun exposure to help individuals make healthy choices. To read more, visit our blog post.

Your QSun device works as a stand-alone so that you can use it and receive notifications even without your phone next to you. However, you will need to download the QSun app to get set up and review your sun exposure data.

Yes, the QSun app is available for free on Google Play and the App Store.

No, the QSun device doesn’t require an internet connection to measure and transmit data.

QSun is compatible with iOS 9.3+ devices and Android 6.0+ devices with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) support.

QSun connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). To connect your device, make sure your Bluetooth is on and searching for enabled devices. Simply click on the Bluetooth button on the app (bottom left of the home page) and you’re ready to enjoy the sun safely!

“Time to Burn” shows how long you can be exposed to the sun before developing a sunburn. It is calculated based on the UV index, environmental condition, your skin type, and sunscreen applied. However, “Time to Burn” does not mean there is a safe level of unprotected sun exposure. When UV levels reach 3 or higher, most people need to use sun protection.

For the most accurate Time To Burn, you’ll need to enter your skin type, environmental situation, and whether or not you’re wearing sunscreen. If you’re using the app without a connected device, you’ll also need to enter your location.

The first time you use the QSun app, you’ll be prompted on the homepage to set up your profile. Tap the text and enter your information. Don’t forget to take the skin type quiz to get the most accurate sun safety tips.

Open the menu and select the profile icon. Select “find your skin type” to take the quiz to find your skin type.

From the homepage, open the sidebar and click the second icon from the top (the icon image changes depending on what you’ve inputted as the environment). Select the option that best represents your current environment.

From the homepage, select the sunscreen icon at the bottom right. Click the “sunscreen reminder” to let QSun know you’ve applied sunscreen. Your Time to Burn will adjust accordingly.

From the homepage, click your current city (highlighted in orange). You’ll be prompted to enter or get your location.

To start the Time to Burn countdown, press the “Track Sun Exposure” button on the homepage. Keep in mind that while your Time To Burn countdown is running, you won’t be able to change information in your profile, your environmental setting, or your location. If you wish to change any of this information, you will have to reset your Time to Burn. You will be given the option to reset by changing any of the above information while your Time to Burn countdown is running.

You have probably paused your Time To Burn countdown, but not fully reset it. If you wish to change information in your profile, your environment setting, or your location, you will have to reset your Time to Burn. You will be given the option to reset by changing any of the above information while your Time to Burn countdown is running.

Yes. Start your Time To Burn countdown when you first go outdoors by pressing the play button on the homepage. When you go indoors, press the pause button. When you go back outdoors, press the resume button. Keep in mind that the harmful effects of sun exposure are cumulative, and taking breaks does not lessen the total damage caused by UV rays. This feature is not meant to be used as a tool for “safe” tanning.

Unfortunately, no. If you reset your Time To Burn, your QSun app will assume that you have not already exposed your skin to the sun for a duration of time. The harmful effects of sun exposure are cumulative, so it is not safe to rely on the Time To Burn if you reset the countdown while still exposing your skin to the sun.

Your QSun needs to know the UV index to provide you with sun safety tips. To get the most accurate UV index, make sure the sensor on the front of the device is exposed to as much sun as you are. Your QTemp won’t be able to give you accurate sun safety tips if it’s hidden in your pocket or covered by a piece of clothing.

Once you have inputted your skin type, environment setting, and applied sunscreen, you will get a Time to Burn countdown. Pressing the play button beneath your Time To Burn will start your Time To Burn countdown. The alert will go off when your countdown is done. You can use this setting as a reminder to reapply sunscreen!

Tap the sidebar button (three lines on top left) > Settings (gear sign) > Notifications. You will be directed to your phone’s settings for QSun. Set the notifications setting to on.

Tap the sidebar button (three lines on top left) > Settings (gear sign) > Notifications. You will be directed to your phone’s settings for QSun. Turn your notification settings to off.

The icons below the UV index on the homepage of the QSun app indicate which types of sun protection to use for your current conditions (e.g. sunscreen, sunglasses, hat).

If you would like to use QSun to monitor the sun exposure of someone else, make sure to clip the device onto their clothing or in a place that will be exposed to the same amount of sunlight as them. Input their personal information into the profile, including their skin type, environment setting, and applied sunscreen. Start the Time to Burn countdown if you would like to receive a notification when it’s time to help them reapply sunscreen.

Yes. From the homepage, simply swipe to the left to see the hourly and daily weather forecasts.

Open the side menu → tap the settings icon (gear icon) → change between °C and °F.

Tap the sidebar button (three lines on top left) > Profile (Person icon) > Edit > Click into the height and weight and choose your preferred units (metric or imperial).

Your QSun app will notify you when it’s time to change the battery on your QSun device. To do so, you’ll need a new CR2032 battery. If you remove the battery, you will lose your recent sun exposure data that has not synchronized with your QSun app.

Tap the sidebar button (three lines on top left) > Settings (gear sign) > Reading interval > Choose your preferred reading interval. The less frequently your QSun device reads data, the less battery power your QSun device will use.

You can follow these steps to try to restore your connection.

With a reading interval of 5 minutes, QTemp will store data for 1 month.

Some features in the QSun app, such as the Vitamin D Tracker and Activity Tracker, are exclusive for QSun App Pro users. To find out how you can be one of the first to be an App Pro user, visit https://shop.qsun.co/

The QSun device runs on a replaceable regular coin cell battery (CR2032). For average use, the estimated battery life is 6 weeks.  The battery life depends on the frequency of measurements. You can choose to take measurements less often to further increase the battery life.

No, QSun cannot be turned off, but you can increase the reading interval to save battery.

Like many wearables, the QSun device is splash and rain resistant but cannot be totally immersed in water.

The QSun device is calibrated so there is no need for additional user calibration.

No, QSun is not a medical device. It just measures ambient temperature.

For optimal protection, sunglass lenses must block both UVA and UVB rays. Side protection is also needed in extreme UV environments, for example during hiking or skiing. UV exposure to the eyes is cumulative over a lifetime and may cause irreversible damage. If you have any concerns, consult your ophthalmologist for more information.

For best results, use a broad spectrum sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. We suggest an SPF of 30 or higher. Apply a thick and even layer of sunscreen to all exposed body parts 15 minutes before going outside. Please note that the difference in sun protection for SPFs above 30 is very little. To know more about SPF, visit our blog post.

Air temperature does not affect the UV index or your risk of developing a sunburn. To read more, visit our blog post.

UV exposure comes from the sun as well as reflective surfaces in your environment. For example, grass reflects up to 10% of UV radiation, while fresh snow reflects as much as 80%. Inputting your environment allows QSun to determine your Time to Burn more accurately.
